Barefoot Football Boots for Kids: Do They Exist and Why Do They Matter?

Barefoot Football Boots for Kids: Do They Exist and Why Do They Matter?

What happens to a child's foot inside a conventional football boot, and what to look for instead

By Bambas Footwear  ·  Handcrafted barefoot shoes for kids  ·  Same-day delivery in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman

Most parents spend a lot of time thinking about football for their kids: which academy, which coach, how many sessions a week. The boots get about five minutes in a sports shop and a size check that may or may not have been accurate.

It is worth spending a bit more time on them. A conventional football boot is one of the least foot-friendly environments a developing foot spends time in, and children in the UAE spend a lot of hours in theirs.

This article explains what the research shows, what to look for in a better boot, and which options are worth considering.

What Happens Inside a Conventional Football Boot

Most football boots share a few design features that create problems for children's feet: a narrow toe box that compresses the toes laterally, a slightly elevated heel, a rigid or semi-rigid sole plate, and in many cases a very snug upper intended to improve ball feel.

These features might make sense for a professional adult player performing at high intensity on a manicured pitch for 90 minutes. For a seven-year-old spending two hours a week on training and a weekend match, the calculus is different.

A 2023 study published in PLOS ONE examined the biomechanics of children aged 4 to 6 wearing barefoot shoes, conventional sports shoes and sandals during walking. Children in barefoot-style footwear demonstrated movement patterns closer to natural unshod walking, with better toe splay, more even load distribution across the forefoot, and mechanics closer to what the foot is designed to do (Lopez et al., 2023, doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0291056).

"After attending young children's training sessions, we realised that more and more very young children wanted to play football, but were sometimes bothered by the width of their shoes. Biomechanical studies confirmed this observation."

Decathlon product development team, on designing wider children's football boots.

The foot of a child under 12 is not a miniature adult foot. It is mostly cartilage, still forming, and highly responsive to the forces placed on it over time. A shoe that compresses the toes repeatedly across hundreds of hours of activity does not simply feel uncomfortable. It shapes the foot.

The Specific Problems With Narrow Football Boots

Toe compression during the kicking motion

When a child kicks a ball, the toes are driven forward into the toe box of the boot at the moment of contact. In a narrow boot, the toes are already compressed. Repeated compression in the same direction, hundreds of times per session, puts mechanical pressure on the toe joints and on the developing nail beds. Ingrown toenails, blisters and subungual bruising are common complaints in youth football players, and the width of the boot is usually a factor.

Heel elevation changes running mechanics

Even a small heel raise in a boot alters the way a child runs. The body compensates by shortening the stride, reducing ankle range of motion and increasing knee flexion on landing. Over a full season, these compensations contribute to the tightening of the calf complex that many youth coaches notice in their players and attribute to growth. Some of it is growth. Some of it is footwear.

Rigid soles reduce proprioceptive feedback

Football requires constant micro-adjustments to balance, weight distribution and direction. The foot does this partly through sensory feedback from the ground. A rigid sole reduces the amount of information the foot receives about the surface beneath it. Research from the University of Heidelberg found that children with more barefoot exposure develop better balance and motor coordination. For a sport built on agility, this is not a small detail.

What Barefoot-Style Football Boots Actually Are

The term barefoot football boot does not mean no protection. It means a boot designed around the principles of natural foot movement: wide toe box, zero or minimal heel drop, a flexible outsole that allows the foot to move through its natural range, and materials thin enough to transmit ground feel.

These boots are not widespread in mainstream sports retail. Most are made by smaller specialist brands. The result, for parents who find them, is a boot that looks like a football boot but functions closer to a natural shoe.

The Joma Gol: A Practical Option

Joma is a Spanish sports brand with strong roots in children's football footwear. The Joma Gol Kids and Joma Gol Junior are the models we carry at Bambas, and they represent one of the most accessible options for parents looking for a more foot-friendly boot for their child.

The Gol range is designed with a wider toe box than most comparable boots, a flexible multi-stud outsole, and construction that prioritises natural foot movement over the ultra-snug fit of performance-focused boots. They work on grass and artificial turf, which covers most pitches used in Dubai and Abu Dhabi academies and school leagues.

They are not a perfect barefoot boot in the strictest sense, but they are meaningfully better than the standard narrow boot for a child still growing.

Joma Gol Kids  ·  Sizes EU 28-35 aprox.

Designed for the youngest footballers. Wider toe box than standard kids boots, flexible multi-stud outsole suitable for both natural grass and artificial turf. The upper is lightweight and allows the foot to move and flex during play rather than holding it in a fixed position.

Best for: Academies, school leagues, weekend matches. Grass and artificial turf pitches across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Joma Gol Junior  ·  Sizes EU 35-40 aprox.

The same design principles as the Kids version, scaled up for older children. Still wider than most comparable boots in the market, still flexible enough to pass the hand-bend test. A practical option for children aged 7 to 12 who are playing regularly and whose feet are still forming.

Best for: Structured academies and school team training. Older children who are playing two or more sessions per week.

What to Look For When Buying Football Boots for Children

If you are buying boots for a child under 12, these are the things that matter most:

1. The toe box width

Put the boot sole against your child's foot with their toes spread naturally. The boot should be as wide at the toes as the foot. If the boot is narrower, the toes will be compressed during play. This is the single most important check.

2. The sole flexibility

Hold the boot at the heel and bend the forefoot upward. A good children's boot should bend reasonably easily with one hand. A boot that barely moves is too rigid for a developing foot.

3. The heel height

Look at the boot from the side. The heel should be only minimally raised above the forefoot, if at all. A significant heel raise is appropriate for adult running shoes with specific biomechanical purposes. It is not appropriate for a child learning to run and kick.

4. The weight

Lighter is almost always better for children. A heavy boot adds fatigue over a two-hour session without adding any benefit for a child's level of play.

5. The fit length

Leave 10 to 12mm of space between the longest toe and the end of the boot. Children's feet swell during exercise. A snug fit at rest becomes a tight fit during the second half.

Size check reminder:  Football boots often run a half-size smaller than regular shoes. Measure before you buy, not after.

The Wider Picture

A child who plays football two or three times a week spends 300 to 500 hours per season in their boots over a full year in an active programme. The cumulative effect of that time in poorly fitting footwear is not trivial.

Parents spend a great deal of attention on technique, nutrition and coaching quality for young footballers. Footwear is treated as an afterthought. It is worth reconsidering that, particularly during the years when the foot is still forming.

The research is consistent: feet that are given the freedom to move naturally develop better strength, better balance and better mechanics. That is as true on a football pitch as it is anywhere else.
